Partners in Health (PIH) was founded in 1987 by Paul Farmer with a simple, yet ambitious, goal: to deliver high-quality & cost-effective health care to one of the world’s poorest areas, Haiti’s Central Plateau region.
By building close partnerships with local government officials and leading medical & academic institutions, he’s been able to:
- Strengthen healthcare systems
- Improve overall care
- Increase healthcare availability in the region
PIH has since expanded far beyond Haiti. Farmer’s innovative community-based model tackles a vast array of communicable diseases in depressed regions around the world. HIV and tuberculosis are two of the most common thanks to their high incidence rate in communities serviced by PIH.
Partnering with The Lynch Foundation
An introduction from a great family friend, Thomas White, led Peter Lynch and Trustee Dr. Ralph Sweetland to PIH.
In 1995, The Lynch Foundation invested in PIH’s research on treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in the shantytowns of Lima, Peru. Thanks to this support, PIH was able to cure and prevent further tuberculosis transmission saving millions of lives. So deeply inspired by the work, the daughter of one of the Lynch trustees — Annika Sweetland — spend several years working for PIH in Lima.
The Foundation provided another grant to support PIH’s work in Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. This disaster killed over 250,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless.
The Lynch Foundation has provided support to PIH for almost 25 years. This has helped them serve 7 million people worldwide across 18 countries.
PIH’s dedication to utilizing community resources to make a local impact aligns perfectly with The Lynch Foundation. Our shared core principles are why we continue to support PIH to this day.
