The Pine Street Inn is the largest homeless shelter in New England. Not only does the Pine Street Inn provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a communal space to gather and find shelter, they’re also dedicated to providing essential and critical services to these individuals as well.
Their mission to end homelessness can be visualized in their huge number of services offered. This is an essential resource for local homeless populations.
Since Partnering with The Lynch Foundation
Accessible resources and education for vulnerable populations are core principles of The Lynch Foundation. These same values are easily reflected in the services and mission of the Pine Street Inn, which is what drew us to the organization in the first place.
In 1993, The Lynch Foundation approved an innovative pilot grant to Pine Street Inn. The grant was to support the development of specialized transitional programs. These programs provide dedicated case management and counseling staff to support individuals as they move from emergency shelters into permanent homes.
Today, Pine Street Inn owns or manages more than 440 permanent supportive housing locations for close to 900 men and women in Greater Boston.
Our contribution to Pine Street Inn helped to push the initiative forward. This partnership created a permanent solution for homeless individuals instead of solely temporary ones.
Pine Street Inn was then able to allocate other resources and local donations to other initiatives within the organization. These include their recovery services, their workforce development, and more.
Following Pine Street Inn’s 50th Anniversary, the Foundation made another critical investment in the capital campaign to increase, preserve, and sustain solutions to homelessness. In recent years, the foundation has made two significant gifts. The first grant helped the organization set up a new transitional shelter that has transitioned all 180 guests into housing during the pandemic. A second grant was made in 2023 focused on support of permanent housing. This grant helped fund a Support Services Reserve in Dorchester where a hotel is being converted into units of supportive housing for homeless seniors. This will allow Pine Street Inn to provide comprehensive wrap-around services to vulnerable elderly tenants, ensuring they remain in stable housing and gain the necessary support.
Pine Street Inn’s management recognizes that there is still much to do, and the Lynch Foundation is a continual support for this shelter.
